Hello!
I’m Scott Winter, and I love teaching students of all ages with diverse musical backgrounds and with different musical goals. Over the past 11 years, I have mentored more than 150 private students and taught over 13,000 private lessons.
For many years I have worked as a worship director at a Baptist church, where I lead a praise band and an adult worship choir, and teach on topics including biblical worship. On Instagram I’m known as “The Worship Pianist,” and I enjoy posting live “Worship Piano Cam” videos on Facebook. Above all, I seek to point others toward Christ through song, and believe that all kinds of music can bring glory to the Creator.
In our free time, my wife and I enjoy playing mini golf, discovering great food, traveling, beachcombing, and spending time with family and friends.
Whether your musical goals are for personal enjoyment, professional development, serving your local church, or all the above, I would love to meet you and help you progress along your musical journey!
Teaching Philosophy
I firmly believe that every student is uniquely gifted and that private lessons are the best approach toward developing the musical talents of each student. After an initial meeting and evaluation to discuss a student’s musical goals, I will create a plan for helping the student (and family) achieve them. I tailor each lesson to the personal needs and learning style of each student and customize my comprehensive and eclectic teaching method that includes interesting and stylistically diverse repertoire; high-quality training in technique, musicianship, and artistry; and instruction in music theory and music history.
I teach classical music, contemporary worship music, popular music, and jazz, and enjoy mentoring students in composition and Christian songwriting. Many of my students actively perform in recitals, compose new music, and/or play piano and lead worship in their churches. Some of them have won and earned top placements in international and regional piano competitions for Christian schools. I have also taught group piano courses at the college level.
Education
I hold a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and Master of Music (M.M.) in Piano Performance from Towson University. At Towson, I won three piano competitions and received more than 10 musical and academic scholarships. I was selected as the undergraduate commencement speaker for Towson’s College of Fine Arts and Communication graduation ceremony, where I was honored to represent more than 400 baccalaureate students. My graduate studies involved greater immersion into jazz piano, modern compositional techniques, and theoretical concepts of “musical geometry.” I defended my thesis entitled “Geometry in Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 1: The Rhythm Necklace as an Analytical Tool” with distinction.
I am working to complete my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Christian Worship from Liberty University (anticipated December 2026). My dissertation focuses on how the lyrics of some of the most popular contemporary worship songs from 1990–2026 express the message and story of the gospel. As a scholar in music and Christian worship, I offer a highly informed perspective toward musicmaking, creativity, and worship leadership in the local church.
