An Adult Student's Perspective on the Benefits of Remote Lessons
As an adult student who has taken traditional piano lessons most of my life, I never seriously considered the advantages of remote learning. Four years ago, I made the switch, and I have no intention of turning back.
The Ultimate Anxiety-Free Experience
The greatest advantage of remote lessons is the complete elimination of lesson-day anxiety. In traditional studios, you often waste valuable lesson time adjusting to an unfamiliar instrument and trying to warm up. With remote lessons, I play the exact piano I have been practicing on all week. I am fully warmed up before the call even connects. Once the lesson begins, the experience is so seamless and smooth that I literally forget we are miles apart.
Unmatched Flexibility and Freedom
Beyond the actual lesson experience, the convenience factor is a major benefit:
Effortless Scheduling: Eliminating the commute makes fitting lessons into a busy adult schedule incredibly simple.
No Geographic Borders: You are no longer restricted to local teachers. You can study with instructors anywhere on the globe, provided you both have an internet connection and a camera.
The Verdict
Remote learning has proven to be a highly effective approach for my piano studies. If you are a traditional student hesitating to make the switch, it is well worth considering. The comfort of playing at home combined with the scheduling flexibility makes it an excellent option for adult learners.

I have known Mr. Scott since I was in kindergarten, just learning how to play piano. Over the last 11 years, piano has been the most consistent part of my life thanks to Mr. Scott. When COVID came in 2020, I was nervous that piano lessons wouldn’t be possible. However, I began taking lessons over FaceTime instead of in person. I believe the virtual lessons haven’t just matched the in-person ones, but may have even been more beneficial. Although I no longer see Mr. Scott as often in person, I can easily call him and have just as much fun as if he were there with me.

Mr. Scott's presence in our son's life has provided him with beautiful talent, confidence and relationship. When Dylan asked for piano lessons on his fifth birthday, we never would have imagined that 11 years later he would still be working with Mr. Scott! They started working together in the traditional, in-person format in our home. When COVID came, we pivoted to online lessons and have remained online since. The online experience provided Dylan a sense of agency that the in-person lessons did not to the same degree. A parent no longer needed to be home during the lessons, which worked out well because my work commitments changed. Dylan became responsible for setting up the device for the call and connecting with Mr. Scott. They catch up for a couple of minutes and then they are fully into the lesson. Dylan communicates should there be any changes in schedule for future lessons and they make appropriate arrangements. On occasion, lessons graciously have been scheduled at slightly odd hours, which virtual lessons can afford. Our very busy high school student-athlete very much appreciates Mr. Scott's willingness to work with him!
The quality of instruction has remained high and Dylan continues to participate in the in-person recitals. Mr. Scott has embraced Dylan's interests outside of piano and has indulged Dylan in his creative imagining of the music he is learning (often as a movie or cartoon score). When Dylan began to take interest in choosing his own pieces, Mr. Scott allowed him the freedom to do so. Playing the piano has healed Dylan's soul through grief, injury and the normal day-to-day transitions in life. When he enters the house, the first thing he does is play for a few minutes. Mr. Scott has technically taught Dylan to play and also has taught him to interpret the music. He has taught Dylan a great deal about music theory as well. Mr. Scott has become Dylan's mentor, and we are grateful for the example Mr. Scott provides our son as he grows into a young man.

Scott Winter has been an excellent teacher and music creator. He has challenged me to become a better singer and musician while always being patient, supportive, and encouraging. Through his guidance, I have explored many different styles of music and learned about their history. He also helped me compose my own music, which gave me the confidence and skills to perform my original work for an audience. During rainy days or when I was unable to attend lessons due to illness, he was always there to continue helping me learn through virtual music lessons. His passion for music and dedication to his students have made a lasting impact on my musical journey. I am grateful for everything he has taught me and highly recommend him to anyone looking to grow as a musician.

I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to take in person and virtual piano lessons with Mr. Scott. From the very beginning, he was patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in helping me grow as a musician. He has a wonderful way of teaching that makes learning feel approachable and enjoyable. Every lesson was well planned, and he took the time to explain concepts clearly, making sure I understood before moving on.
One of the things I appreciated most was how flexible and accommodating he was when scheduling lessons. He always worked with me to find times that were convenient for both of us, which made it much easier to stay consistent. He created a supportive and engaging environment that felt personal and interactive.
His instruction has been especially valuable in helping me develop my piano skills for singing and worship. Through his guidance, I became more confident playing while singing and learned techniques that improved both my musical ability and overall confidence. He encouraged me when I struggled, celebrated my progress, and motivated me to keep improving.
What truly sets him apart is his patience and positive attitude. He never made me feel rushed or discouraged when learning something new. Instead, he made every lesson fun, enjoyable, and tailored to my learning pace. His passion for music and teaching is evident in every lesson, and it inspires his students to do their best.
I highly recommend Mr. Scott to anyone looking for a piano teacher. Whether you are a complete beginner or someone wanting to strengthen your skills for worship, performance, or personal enjoyment, he provides excellent instruction, encouragement, and support. My experience learning with him has been incredibly positive, and I am thankful for the knowledge, confidence, and musical growth I gained through his lessons.

Our sons Lucas and Philip have been taking online lessons with Scott on a nearly weekly basis since late 2020. The experience has been outstanding, and the online format adds efficiency, flexibility in scheduling and reduced travel time. Philip and Lucas especially like the added convenience of doing piano lessons remotely that still incorporate all the instructional rigor of in-person lessons. With only a laptop and an internet connection, the student gets all the feedback that he/she would receive in person in a convenient and comfortable setting. Scott does an absolutely fabulous job relating to his younger students and provides consistently top class piano instruction.
